Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi west, says the non-submission of portfolios with the list of ministerial nominees has made the screening “a beautiful nonsense”. Speaking when he appeared on Channels TV, Melaye said Nigerians are unhappy with the ongoing screening at the senate. The senate has been widely criticised for asking many nominees to “take a bow and go” rather than grill them ahead of their inauguration. The Supreme Court has sacked Mustapha Usman, an All Progressives Congress (APC) member of the House of Representatives, representing Yola South/Yola North/Girei Federal Constituency of Adamawa State. The Supreme Court held that, besides that it was found that Usman forged his credentials, he also did not participate in the National Youth Service Corps scheme. A five-man panel of the court, led by Justice John Okoro, held that Modibo, who came second in the APC primary, did not participate in all the stages of the election. Therefore, the person who came second in the National Assembly election and met the constitutional requirements, should be issued certificate of return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday warned the Senate not to allow powerful persons to set Edo State on fire in order to satisfy their thirst for power. Obaseki’s comment is coming on the heel of the Senate resolution on Edo Assembly crisis directing him to issue a fresh proclamation for the inauguration of the state Assembly. Obaseki in a statement issued and signed by Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, declared, “This illegality will not stand.” He said it was unfortunate that the “Distinguished Senate” would act “in flagrant breach of various court orders” and purport to come to factual and legal conclusions concerning a matter in which the parties are already before the courts and therefore sub judice. A mate of President Muhammadu Buhari in the Nigerian Army,  told the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal on Tuesday that the claim that he and members of his set were asked to hand over their school certificates to the Nigerian Army while being enlisted in 1962 was false. Tarfa was testifying as Buhari’s first defence witness in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to challenge the outcome of the February 23, 2019 presidential election. Under cross-examination by counsel for the Independent National Electoral Commission, Yunus Usman (SAN), Tarfa said he was enlisted in the Nigerian Army alongside Buhari and others on April 16, 1962. He confirmed that the medium of instruction “was English language and English language alone.” He also confirmed that he and Buhari “passed the examinations in flying colours.” When asked, he named some members of his set with whom he and Buhari were enlisted to include, Brig.-

An Army Lance Corporal, identified as Moses, who allegedly stabbed a driver, Ogbimi, to death over an altercation in Okene, Kogi State, has been arrested. It was gathered that the deceased, a driver with a popular transport company, had gone to recover one of the company’s vehicles that broke down, when their towing van bruised a soldier’s car. An argument ensued and the soldier attacked the deceased with a jack knife. He then got in his vehicle and fled. But road users and other passers-by chased him. He abandoned his car and ran into a bush behind a private building at Agbede in Edo State, from where he was arrested.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urges the Senate to further give credibility to its ministerial screening by sending the names of the nominees to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The party says the screening exercise must have enabled the Senate to further confirm that many of the nominees presented to it by President Muhammadu Buhari include individuals, who as former governors and ministers, wrecked their states and ministries and have serious allegations of corruption, abuse of office and stealing of public funds hanging on their necks. Boko Haram gunmen on Saturday killed 23 mourners in Borno state in Nigeria's restive northeast after they attended a funeral, local militia and residents said. At about 10:30 GMT, the attackers on three motorbikes opened fire on a group of men as they walked back from a funeral in Nganzai district near the state capital Maiduguri, local militia leader Bunu Bukar Mustapha said. “Our men recovered 23 dead bodies from the scene of the attack, which happened this morning,” Mustapha said. The men were returning to Badu Kuluwu from nearby Goni Abachari village where they had attended funeral prayers for a relative, said Mustapha. A Nganzai district official confirmed both the incident and death toll. “I received calls from Nganzai that Boko Haram killed 23 people near Badu Kuluwu this morning,” said the official, who asked not to be identified for his own safety. Elder Simon Achuba Kogi state deputy governor LOKOJA—Kogi State Deputy Governor, Elder Simon Achuba, has issued a seven-day notice to Governor Yahaya Bello to pay all his benefits from 2017 till date, amounting to N819,709,980.00, or face legal action. Achuba said the money was his salaries, impress and allowances entitled to him since 2017, which the governor refused to pay. Kogi State Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja was thrown into a rowdy session, on Wednesday, when the witness to Yakubu Oseni of APC admitted that the card reader reports he presented does not tally with the figures of accredited voters in the voters register used for the Kogi Central senatorial election. The witness, Salisu Aliyu, an ICT expert working for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), presented the CTC of card reader reports for all the polling units in Kogi Central senatorial election marked as exhibit 3AR2 by the chairman of the three man panel, Hon. Justice O.A. Chijioke. Aliyu who initially claimed that the figures of the accredited voters in the voters register tally with the figures of voters in his card reader reports, however, admitted that it does not tally upon cross examination by Ayo Asala (SAN), Counsel to the first Petitioner (Natasha Akpoti). Tanko Muhammad, the new head of Nigeria’s judiciary, has said that vicious termites destroyed his primary school certificate. Mr Muhammad said the termites invaded his home in Bauchi State in 1998 and devoured all documents inside beyond recovery. “No portion of the certificate was salvaged,” Mr Muhammad said. The claim was contained in an affidavit which the top jurist submitted to the Senate last week to be confirmed as the head of the Supreme Court. The specific affidavit has been circulating on social media since Monday night, but PREMIUM TIMES has obtained additional credentials relating to Mr Muhammad’s confirmation from parliamentary sources. Mr Muhammad swore the affidavit on February 13, 2002, while he was a judge at the Jos Division of the Court of Appeal. He became a Supreme Court judge in 2007.
