Kogi Guber Poll: Engr. Musa Wada Vision On Health.
Our women are dying in droves in the process of bringing forth lives. No Pregnant Woman wants to die in Labour. These women brought us into this world, yet we are sending them to their graves..
In a hospital, the doctors were called to see a patient who had just been "rushed" in. She had been labouring for 48 hours, the relatives said. But for 16hours the body of the baby had refused to come out after the delivary of the head. The diagnosis was obvious: shoulder dystocia (impaction of the shoulders within the bony parts of the birth canal). Normally, the baby had just about 5 - 10mins to remain alive. Not sixteen hours! How did that happen?!
The response was immediate: no available health centre within the patient's community, no easily accesible road to the mainland, and no means of transportation during the course of the night. The baby was eventually delivered after a couple of special maneuvers. But that was when the real battle started. The mother developed severe systemic infection, had a heart failure, and then "threw an embolus". All within 24 hours. She never survived.
This scenario highlight a case of maternal death that could easily have been averted. Her leaders failed her. Many similar, or even worse, cases abound all over the State.
This is unacceptable. How many rural dwellers have access to health centres? How many rural dwellers can afford basic heathcare? How many rural dwellers know when to seek healthcare? The answers are obvious.
No pregnant woman wants to die in labour. These women brought us into this world, yet we are sending them to their graves. This is something we must think about. It is true that our leaders have failed them. Yet there is always something we can do. The time to act is now!
Engr. MUSA Wada Vision on Health is to prepare a revolutionary health care Master Plan with the support and assistance of UNICEF and World Health Organization (WHO) to provide healthcare services at affordable costs to the general populace of Kogi State.
Increased investment in healthcare is linked to economic growth and consequently to reducing poverty. Kogi state is battling with a number of crushing health indicator, including malaria, tuberculosis and infant and maternal mortality, all of which have a sweeping impact on productivity. In order to end poverty, we must harness the demographic dividends through investment in health, education and livelihood -especially for our young people.
• We shall build a New Health City in Anyigba, Okene and Kabba with the state of the art facilities.
• Continue significant funding and sourcing of international support for the equipping and management of our General Hospitals.
• Provision of excellent healthcare services leveraging on a revolutionary National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to improve technology and subsidize healthcare cost across the State.
• Promote Medical Tourism by persuading the Federal Government to create a Healthcare free zone in Kogi State most especially in Lokoja and other parts for vulnerable (Children 0-5 years and Elderly 70 years and above) and also to reduce infant and maternal mortality rate.
• Partner with large foreign healthcare organizations (such as GE Health, Bill & Melinda Gates, etc.) to construct a World Class Teaching Hospital at Kogi State University, Anyigba.
• We shall introduce free medical services for underprivileged pregnant women in General Hospitals across the State to commence with the senatorial district which has the largest population of underprivileged persons. No woman should die during child birth.
• Invest huge capital investment in training of healthcare professionals, it simply requires simple common sense and wisdom to realize the value and invest in it.
KOGI is our home. Let us now turn it into the great State we know it can and should be.
Thank you all.
Together, we shall build the KOGI of our dreams..
Signed.
